The Barrel
Something About Company
The idea to convert the former parental home into a business premises became a reality in 1981. In the early years, ‘t Vat was a Brown café and the regular pub of the Cosmos football club. The opening hours were Thursday evening and on Saturday from 12:00. Especially on Saturday afternoon, people liked to come there for a drink and a bite to eat. Whatever was cooked that day, was eaten. The menu was limited to a few dishes.
‘t Vat also served as a home for the start and finish of rallying in Suriname. Due to the increasing pressure, ‘t Vat could no longer be seen as a hobby, but in addition to family members stepping in, people had to be employed.
Despite the economic malaise of the 90s, ‘t Vat has held its own. Today, ‘t Vat is the most visited terrace in Paramaribo with very long opening hours, an extensive menu and activities throughout the year.
A hobby that got out of hand has grown into an (inter)national concept.
